Appointment of Chancellor for Rutgers University–Camden

April 22, 2014

Members of the Rutgers Community:

I take great pleasure in announcing the appointment of Phoebe A. Haddon, a brilliant scholar and gifted administrator, as the new chancellor of Rutgers University-Camden, effective July 1, 2014. Professor Haddon currently serves as dean of the University of Maryland's Francis King Carey School of Law, the first African-American dean in the law school's nearly 200-year history, where she twice has been named among the 25 most influential people in legal education by the National Jurist. Before coming to Maryland, she served from 1981 to 2009 as professor of law at Temple University's Beasley School of Law.

In her five years at Maryland, Dean Haddon was instrumental in raising the reputation and resources of the law school. Most notably, she helped secure a $30 million gift from the W.P. Carey Foundation; the law school was subsequently renamed in honor of the Carey family. She went on to surpass the school’s fundraising goal, securing significant gifts in support of faculty research, academic programs and student scholarships.

Throughout her career, Phoebe Haddon has been a powerful advocate for student resources, faculty development, academic freedom, and diversity in higher education. Equally important, her work with numerous civic and professional organizations in Pennsylvania and Maryland demonstrates her commitment to partnering with communities for positive change beyond the campus. This record of accomplishment will serve her very well in leading a campus community so deeply committed to community engagement.

Phoebe has served on numerous boards, including the Delaware Valley Community Reinvestment Fund, the Women’s Law Project, the William Penn Foundation, the Samuel S. Fels Fund, and the Philadelphia Education Fund. She holds a bachelor's degree from Smith College, a J.D. with honors from Duquesne University School of Law, and an LL.M. from Yale Law School.

I want to thank the search committee and the chair, Todd Clear, provost and senior vice chancellor of Rutgers University-Newark, for their hard work in reviewing the talented pool of candidates and recommending this outstanding individual to me.

Please join me in welcoming Phoebe Haddon to Rutgers University-Camden and to the Rutgers community.

Sincerely,

Bob Barchi
